A major new community storytelling initiative—The Volunteer Project—was formally launched on 4 April 2025 during the Declaration Ceremony for the High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, Pippa Kirkbride. The ceremony, held at Jubilee Hall in Amersham, welcomed approximately 130 guests, including mayors from across the county, serving and former High Sheriffs, the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, and a wide range of charity leaders, civic dignitaries, and community representatives.
The project is being delivered by Narrators Lens CIC and will be led by award-winning photographer Christopher James Hall. It will run throughout the High Sheriff’s year in office, celebrating the stories of Buckinghamshire’s volunteer community through photography and personal narrative.

Recognising Volunteers Through Storytelling
The Volunteer Project is designed to shine a light on the people who give their time to help others—often quietly and without recognition. Through carefully produced interviews and portrait photography, the project will share the motivations, values, and lived experiences of volunteers across the county.
Although Christopher did not speak during the formal part of the event, he spent time engaging with guests, including representatives from local charities, voluntary groups, and public sector bodies. These conversations are already shaping the focus of the project, ensuring it reflects the wide range of volunteering taking place across Buckinghamshire.

A Partnership with Purpose
Working alongside the High Sheriff adds significant value to the project. The role of High Sheriff—an independent, non-political Royal appointment—provides a powerful civic platform to promote the importance of volunteering and community connection.
Pippa Kirkbride’s priorities for her year include recognising unsung community heroes and encouraging stronger links between voluntary organisations. The Volunteer Project aligns directly with this vision, making the partnership both purposeful and timely.
“Working with the High Sheriff allows this project to reach deeper into the heart of communities,” Christopher said after the event. “It’s not just about photography—it’s about respect, recognition, and real stories being shared in meaningful ways.”

Project Scope and Opportunities
The Volunteer Project will take place over the next 12 months and include:
- Volunteer portraits and interviews conducted across Buckinghamshire
- A series of exhibitions across the county in early 2026
- A printed publication shared with community hubs, schools, and libraries
- A digital collection of stories accessible to the public and partner organisations
As with all Narrators Lens CIC projects, this work will be user-led, with participants shaping how their stories are told and presented.

How to Take Part
